چکیده

intraoral communication. Marunick et al1 classified midfacial defects into 2 major categories: midline midfacial defects, which include the nose and/or upper lip; and lateral defects, which include the cheek and orbital contents. Combinations of these 2 categories also exist. Acquired midfacial defects often present with severe disfigurement and functional impairment. Large defects that result from cancer treatment rarely are rehabilitated by surgical reconstruction alone; they usually require a facial prosthesis to restore function and appearance. In addition, an intraoral prosthesis such as an obturator is often needed to restore speech and swallowing. Fabrication of an extraoral facial prosthesis challenges the artistic ability of the prosthodontist. Retention of the prosthesis is also a difficult problem because of its size and weight; securing it in place can be a formidable task. This clinical report describes the rehabilitation of a large midfacial defect with a 3-piece prosthesis that included a sectional intraoral obturator–extraoral facial prosthesis and an intermediate retentive acrylic framework with the use of magnets.

Reconstruction of a midfacial defect using an intraoral-extraoral combination prosthesis employing magnets: a clinical report

Radical maxillectomy frequently leads to extended defects in hard and soft tissues that result in a connection between the oral cavities and orbit. If the defect cannot be surgically reconstructed, a combination prosthesis may be necessary to remedy dysfunction in patient function, comfort, esthetics. For minor defects, enlargement of the base of the intra oral prosthesis is generally sufficien...

Magnet retained intraoral-extra oral combination prosthesis: a case report

Facial prosthesis is generally considered over surgical reconstruction to restore function and appearance in patients with facial defects that resulted from cancer resection. Retention of the prosthesis is challenging due to its size and weight. Retention can be achieved by using medical grade adhesives, resilient attachments, clips and osseointegrated implants. It can also be connected to obtu...

Modified technique to fabricate a hollow light-weight facial prosthesis for lateral midfacial defect: a clinical report

Large oro-facial defects result from cancer treatment consequences in serious functional as well as cosmetic deformities. Acceptable cosmetic results usually can be obtained with a facial prosthesis. However, retention of a large facial prosthesis can be challenging because of its size and weight. This article describes prosthetic rehabilitation of a 57-year-old man having a right lateral mid-f...

Magnet-Retained Facial Prosthesis Combined with Maxillary Obturator

Prosthetic rehabilitation of the midfacial defects has always perplexed prosthodontists. These defects lead to functional and esthetic deficiencies. The purpose of this clinical case report was the presentation of the prosthetic rehabilitation of an extraoral-intraoral defect using two-piece prosthesis magnetically connected. This prosthesis has dramatically improved the patient's speech, masti...
